Ultracompact surface
Dekton countertops, built for the Las Vegas heat
Dekton countertops are one of the best choices for an outdoor kitchen in the Las Vegas heat. Dekton can sit in direct sun all year without fading, and it takes heat that would damage other surfaces without leaving a mark. Calder has the blades, machinery and equipment to fabricate it. Most shops in the valley don’t.

The material
What Dekton is
Dekton is an ultracompact surface. It isn’t a natural stone, and it isn’t standard engineered quartz either. It’s made by compressing raw minerals under extreme heat and pressure, which makes it far denser than most countertop materials. That density is what lets Dekton resist sun, heat and scratches.
The same density makes Dekton difficult to fabricate, so the shop that cuts it matters as much as the material.
Day-to-day care is minimal. Dekton doesn’t need sealing and doesn’t stain. Pool chemicals, sunscreen and grill grease around an outdoor kitchen don’t affect it, and a wipe-down is all it needs.

The comparison
Dekton vs quartz, side by side
Dekton is the first material we suggest to homeowners and designers for anything that stays outdoors full time, such as an outdoor kitchen, a BBQ island or an outdoor bar. It’s a common specification in the custom homes we work on in McDonald Highlands, Lake Las Vegas and the rest of the valley. People compare it with quartz more than anything else, because both look like consistent engineered surfaces in a sample. The real difference is what holds each one together.
Quartz
- Resin-bound, so it fades outdoors and belongs indoors
- Handles everyday kitchen heat, but not heat from a grill
- Never needs sealing
- The widest color and pattern range of any surface we cut
Dekton
- Sintered with no resin, so it holds its color in full desert sun
- Takes heat straight off a grill without a mark
- Never needs sealing
- Our first recommendation for anything that lives outdoors
Indoors, either one performs well. For anything outdoors or near constant heat, Dekton is the better choice. To compare more materials, our materials hub sorts everything we fabricate by where it will be used.
Outdoor performance
Why Dekton works outdoors in the desert
Dekton is the one material on this page you can leave out in the Las Vegas sun without it fading.
The other engineered surfaces we fabricate, including quartz, Caesarstone, and Cambria, are made for indoor use, and direct desert sun fades them over time.
Dekton also handles heat that would crack or discolor other materials, so you can set a hot pan or grill tool straight down on it. An outdoor kitchen or BBQ surround in the Las Vegas climate needs a surface that resists both UV and heat, since it never comes indoors.
Granite is the natural stone option that handles outdoor heat well. Our outdoor kitchens page covers the tradeoffs between the two.

Dekton fabricator
Why most shops can’t fabricate Dekton, and how Calder does
Dekton’s density makes it hard to fabricate. Standard blades wear down fast on it, and a shop without the right equipment either turns the job away or damages the slab partway through a cut.
Calder has the blades, machinery and equipment to fabricate Dekton. In our Henderson shop we cut it on the same five-axis bridge saw we use for every material, set up to hold tolerance in a surface this dense.
Our water wall works the same way on Dekton as on every other material. Water jets wash the dust into a trough so it stays out of the air, and cutting Dekton is as clean as anything else we fabricate.
We laser-measure every outdoor kitchen or BBQ surround before cutting, so the angles and the cutouts for a grill or side burner fit the space exactly. While we fabricate, you get daily updates and photo reports, and a supervisor is on call.

Indoor uses for Dekton
Dekton works indoors as well. Its density and range of finishes make it a good choice for fireplace surrounds and full-height feature walls indoors, where a large-format slab has to keep its look through years of heat from the firebox. It also suits an indoor kitchen for a homeowner who wants that look and durability and never wants to think about sealing.
The fabrication is the same indoors or out, and one crew measures, cuts and installs it. On a full-height wall, large-format Dekton slabs leave fewer seams to plan around than a smaller-format material, which is one reason designers specify it so often for feature walls.

Dekton countertop questions, answered
- Is Dekton good for an outdoor kitchen in the Las Vegas heat?
- Yes. Dekton is made to take direct sun and high heat without fading or breaking down. That makes it one of the best choices for an outdoor kitchen or BBQ surround in this climate.
- Dekton vs granite outdoors, which holds up better?
- Both hold up well outdoors in Las Vegas. Granite is a natural stone that handles heat and sun and needs sealing now and then. Dekton is an ultracompact surface that never needs sealing and resists fading for years. Either one works for an outdoor kitchen. The choice often comes down to whether you want veined natural stone or a more consistent engineered look. Our granite page goes into that comparison in more depth.
- Dekton vs quartz, what’s the difference?
- Engineered quartz is bound with resin, and the resin fades in direct sun and doesn’t cope well with sustained heat. Dekton is sintered with extreme heat and pressure and contains no resin, so it keeps its color in full Las Vegas sun and takes heat straight off a grill. Both do well indoors. For anything outdoors or near constant heat, Dekton is the better choice. Our quartz page covers where quartz works best.
- Does Dekton fade in direct sunlight?
- No. Dekton is the one material we offer that is made specifically to resist UV fading. It’s our first recommendation for any surface that sits in direct desert sun all year.
- Can any shop cut Dekton?
- No. Dekton is dense enough to burn through standard blades. Fabricating it without damaging the slab or the equipment takes special diamond blades and the right machine. Calder has the blades, machinery and equipment to fabricate Dekton, and most shops in the valley don’t.
- Is Dekton the same as porcelain?
- No. They’re different manufactured materials, made by different processes, and they perform differently outdoors. Calder fabricates Dekton. We don’t fabricate porcelain slab. If your project calls for porcelain, we’re happy to talk through the choice of outdoor material with you, but porcelain isn’t something we cut in our shop.
- Does Calder install Dekton for both indoor and outdoor projects?
- Yes. We fabricate Dekton for outdoor kitchens and BBQ surrounds and for indoor work such as fireplace surrounds, feature walls and kitchen counters. The same crew fabricates and installs every one.
