Natural stone
Granite countertops for Las Vegas homes
Calder fabricates and installs granite countertops for homes in Henderson and across Las Vegas. We are a granite fabricator with our own shop, and one team handles every slab from concept to completion. Granite has been the standard countertop material for decades. It is one of the few natural stones that handles direct Las Vegas sun in an outdoor kitchen as well as it does indoors. If you’re still comparing options, our materials guide shows how granite compares with quartz, quartzite and Dekton.
Strengths
What granite countertops are good at
- Direct heat
- A hot pan can go straight from the burner to the counter without scorching or cracking the surface.
- Full sun
- Granite holds up in direct summer sun without fading or breaking down, so it works well for an outdoor kitchen or BBQ surround.
- Longevity
- With periodic sealing, granite keeps its finish and stain resistance through decades of daily use. That is why it was the standard for so long.
- Pattern
- Granite is natural stone, so the color and crystal pattern in your slab won’t repeat exactly anywhere else, even on a slab cut from the same block.
- One crew
- We fabricate and install in-house. The crew that cuts your slab is the crew that sets it, and you have one point of contact for the whole project.
- Daily wear
- Knives, pans and everyday kitchen traffic take a long time to show on granite, so it suits a busy household.
The material
What granite is
Granite is natural stone, quarried in large blocks and cut into slabs. It is made of interlocking mineral crystals, mostly quartz and feldspar, which give granite its speckled, crystalline look and its hardness. Colors run from classic blacks and grays to warmer golds, blues and reds, depending on the quarry. Every block comes out of the earth, so no two granite slabs have exactly the same pattern, even ones from the same quarry.

Outdoors
Granite countertops in an outdoor kitchen
Granite is one of the few countertop materials that can take a Las Vegas summer outdoors.
Full sun, long stretches of heat and the swing from a hot afternoon to a cool desert night won’t make it fade, warp or crack the way some materials do. Granite and Dekton cover most of the outdoor kitchen and BBQ surround work we do in the valley. Outdoor granite is fabricated the same way as indoor granite, cut on the same saw and set by the same crew.

At the slab wall
Choosing your granite
Granite is natural stone, so the slab you pick is the actual piece that becomes your countertop. It helps to see it in person. A few things are worth deciding before you choose a slab:
Pattern matching across seams. On a large island or an L-shaped kitchen, we place the seams so the granite’s natural pattern lines up as closely as possible across the joint.
Edge profile. Options run from a simple eased edge to a full bullnose or ogee. The right one depends on the style of the kitchen and how the granite’s pattern looks along the edge.
Backsplash and outdoor returns. Granite can run from a kitchen countertop up the backsplash, or outside into a BBQ surround, using matching or complementary slabs.
We settle all of this at the slab wall, with the actual stone in front of you. The steps from first visit to final walkthrough are on our process page.

Upkeep
How often granite needs sealing
Granite is a dense, tough stone, and it still needs a reseal every now and then to keep resisting stains from oil, wine and other everyday spills. That is a small amount of upkeep for a material that, with proper care, outlasts the kitchen around it.
Outdoor granite works the same way, with one difference. A surround that sits fully exposed to the weather, with no patio cover over it, usually needs resealing more often. We’ll set the right schedule for your setup during your visit.
In the shop
How we fabricate granite, indoors or out
On a stone as dense as granite, the saw’s tilt and rotation matter. That is one reason we fabricate in-house on our five-axis bridge saw instead of sending slabs out to another shop. One crew cuts, polishes and installs every granite countertop we fabricate, on a kitchen island or an outdoor surround. Calder work is licensed through Brady Builds LLC, NSCB license 0092206 (C-19 Terrazzo and Marble). See the fabrication shop.

Where granite works best
Granite is a durable everyday surface for kitchen countertops, holds up on a bathroom vanity top, works well on an indoor fireplace surround or feature wall, and is one of the two materials, alongside Dekton, built for an outdoor kitchen or BBQ surround in direct Las Vegas sun. Homeowners also choose it when a project includes both an indoor kitchen and an outdoor cooking area and they want the same material across the whole property instead of a different one past the back door.
Before you decide
Granite countertop questions: sealing, sun and more
- Does granite need to be sealed?
- Yes, now and then. Granite is dense and durable, and an occasional reseal keeps it resisting stains from oil, wine and other everyday spills. With that care, a granite countertop lasts for decades.
- Can granite be used outdoors in Las Vegas?
- Yes. Granite is one of the few countertop materials that holds up in direct Las Vegas sun and summer heat without fading or breaking down. That is why so many outdoor kitchens and BBQ surrounds use it.
- Is granite as durable as quartz or quartzite?
- Granite is very durable. It handles direct heat better than most engineered surfaces, and it is one of the few materials rated for outdoor use in Las Vegas. Quartzite usually ranks harder on the mineral hardness scale, and quartz never needs sealing. All of them are strong, long-lasting choices for a Las Vegas home, and the best one often depends on whether the project is indoors, outdoors or both.
- How are seams handled on granite countertops?
- We plan seams at the layout stage, before cutting, so the natural pattern lines up as closely as possible across the joint. A properly cut seam fits exactly, with no gaps. It is sealed with an adhesive color-matched to the granite’s ground tone, so the joint blends into the pattern on an indoor island or an outdoor BBQ surround.
- Can granite go straight from the stove without a trivet?
- Yes. Granite resists heat well enough to take a hot pan straight off the burner without scorching. For heat that sits there a long time, a trivet is still a good idea on any stone surface, indoors or out.
- What edge profile works best with granite?
- Granite takes most edge profiles, from a simple eased edge to a full bullnose or ogee. We plan the edge along with the layout so it suits the slab’s natural pattern, on a kitchen island or an outdoor BBQ surround.
- Is granite a good fit for a bathroom vanity?
- Yes. Granite’s hardness and heat resistance work as well on a bathroom vanity top as in a full kitchen. It comes in a wide range of natural colors, so it is easy to pair with almost any cabinets or tile.
